Daddy D's 50's Music revue!
Some of the cool parts of “Nifty Fifties” have to do with the troupe’s versatility
A Daddy D trademark is to take existing songs and hammer them into humorous bits.
Then there’s “Walkin’ After Midnight,” the famous Patsy Cline song. With it, Shelly Emmer does one of her full-on routines as a Lucille Ball-like comedienne, complete with her own style with a deep-woods accent and fractured English. She’s dressed in a bright orange deer hunting suit to do a giant tease of a jack pine savage method – “huntin’ after midnight, shinin’ with you.” In real life, it is illegal to hunt in the dark by shining a flashlight in the eyes of deer. Rumor has it, some people do this. Ahem. At any rate, the song/routine is a fabulous satire that’s just right for Wisconsinites.
Among other highlights are Cahall and Emmer firing up “You Are the One That I Want” from “Grease,” Kevin Van Ess in his saxophone solo walks through the audience and Johnson in his big-voice solos, like at the close of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.”
